RDG Trio is a contemporary Belgian jazz trio

The RDG Trio is a contemporary Belgian jazz trio led by drummer Rune De Groote, with Miel De Koninck on piano and Wolf De Backer on double bass. The band crafts lyrical, deeply interactive music that blends modern jazz aesthetics with a personal touch, rooted in acoustic tradition yet open to rhythmic innovation.

"Creating this album has been a personal journey shaped by my experiences and emotions. Each track tells a unique story, capturing moments that are close to my heart. I hope these songs resonate with you, inviting you to explore themes of love, resilience, and self-discovery. Join me on this musical adventure as we connect through the power of music", says Rune

Their debut album, 'Echoes Of Our Name', out on Friday 27 February, presents a fresh voice in the European jazz landscape. Over the past years, the trio has been coached by jazz giants such as Antoine Pierre & Lennert Baerts, which has greatly enriched their musical approach. We met Rune to discuss his views on the project and on the music industry:

Q: How did the trio come together, and what led you to decide to record an album together?

A: The formation of the RDG Trio was quite organic. It started with a shared passion for jazz and different styles. I had collaborated with both of my bandmates on different projects previously, which helped us build a strong connection. One day after I hired them to play a gig, we realized that we had a unique chemistry. It felt natural to explore that together.

Q: You’ve said the album brings a fresh voice to the European jazz scene. Can you expand on that and tell us more about the sound and your influences?

A: When I refer to our album bringing a fresh voice to the European jazz scene, I'm highlighting our desire to push the boundaries of traditional jazz. Our sound is a fusion of various influences including classical & folk which we blend with modern jazz elements. Each member brings their own musical experiences and personality into the mix. This is amazing when you bring a composition and everyone plays it in their own way but still with an open ear and respect for each other. We aim to resonate with a diverse audience while honoring the roots of jazz.

Q: With so many live dates already booked, do you feel optimistic about 2026 for live music, despite the difficulties many independent artists are facing?

A: With our release tour dates already lined up, I am indeed optimistic about 2026 for live music. While it’s true that independent artists face many challenges, there's a growing desire for authentic experiences in music. People are eager to return to live performances. Our album has generated a lot of excitement. I believe we have an opportunity to connect deeply through music, overcoming any obstacles together.

Q: Music has no borders, especially instrumental productions where language is not a barrier. Did you already experience positive interest for your music abroad?

A: Absolutely! The power of instrumental music genuinely transcends borders. We've already received positive feedback from various international audiences, which has been incredibly encouraging. It’s heartwarming to see how our music resonates with listeners from different cultures, and it drives us to keep sharing our art beyond our local scene. The connections we make through music are profound, and it’s exciting to witness our sound finding appreciation across the globe.
