Out Friday 13 February

Intimate, soothing and mesmerizing. OUTER is the alter ego of composer Tom Soetaert, who wrote his debut album (2018) on a sheep farm in Bárðardalur, Northern Iceland. It was released on Swedish pianolabel 1631 Recordings, got 4-star reviews in national newspapers and blogs, and has been praised at radio’s such as BBC Sounds, StuBru, Klara and KEXP. In between albums, OUTER made soundtracks and reworks, in collaboration with Sohnarr, Illuminine and Mabe Fratti.
The album explores contrasts — light and dark — and the idea that one cannot exist without the other. These themes are reflected in the moods, dynamics and lyrics, but also in the arrangements themselves.
"Warm, organic instrumentation is set against colder electronic textures, and intimate minimalism slowly unfolds into sweeping, cinematic climaxes. Although the album is rooted in personal emotions and experiences, every listener is invited to form their own interpretation — and who knows, perhaps find some comfort along the way", he said.
The cover was designed by Wendy Vandeputte and perfectly captures the colours and atmosphere of the music. Light and dark. Impressionistic. And simply stunning, it will look great in any record collection. Inside the album you can find a painting by Tinca Veerman. Tinca is an artist from Amsterdam who created visuals for our music a few years ago. Her painting depicts a deep dive into the universe of the record — fragments of the lyrics are also incorporated into it. The whole thing was designed by Walter Oscar Rothe.

OUTER live features Tom Soetaert, Nicolas Delépine, Arne De Tremerie, Laurens Van Bouwelen and Wanthanee Wadngam. This Friday they will be presenting the album at Music Mania, the Ghent-based record store in a stripped-down setup and bringing along a special guest (Kraanlei 6, Ghent — Friday 13.02, 18h00).
